#21 - 1.5 Degrees and Rising

Hi Greensters,

🔥 Earth is now slowly starting to peak above the 1.5 °C limit — a threshold scientists once hoped we’d never reach. 2024 was the hottest year on record, with every month above that critical mark.

🌍 The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns we’re very likely to exceed 1.5 °C within the next five years, and could even approach 2 °C if rapid action isn’t taken. A 2 °C world isn’t just warmer — it’s riskier, bringing more extreme weather, rising seas, stressed ecosystems, and growing threats to food and water security.

🍆 To lighten the mood, this week’s green meal brings a bit of comfort to the table — crispy baked eggplant fries with a lemon-tahini dip: simple, warming, and perfectly in season.

🥗 The Green Meal

Golden, crunchy, and baked to perfection — these Mediterranean-style eggplant fries bring comfort and color to autumn. 🍆✨

Eggplants grow well in southern Europe’s late-season warmth and require relatively little fertilizer, making them a climate-friendly choice. Roasting them instead of frying cuts energy use and keeps things light, while the lemon-tahini dip adds creamy richness and plant-based protein.

Small, seasonal dishes like this remind us that sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated — just thoughtful, delicious, and close to home.

♻️ Eco Tip

Awareness: 🍂 As temperatures drop across Europe, heating becomes one of the biggest household energy drains — accounting for up to 70% of residential energy use in many countries.

Action: 🧣 Layer up before turning up the heat. Lower your thermostat by just 1 °C to cut your energy use by around 7%. Use thick curtains, draught stoppers, and timed heating schedules to keep warmth where it belongs — inside. Small efficiency habits now mean lower bills and fewer emissions through the winter months.

❣️ Quote of the Week

"Politicians try to negotiate - it is good to negotiate, but we cannot negotiate with nature, we cannot negotiate with physics, and we cannot negotiate with science.”

José Manuel Barroso, Former President of the European Commission
