#4 - Fast Fashion and AI

We all love a good bargain on clothes. But behind every cheap price and fresh new arrival lies a system that’s piling up waste, draining resources, and polluting the planet at scale. Fast fashion has long been in the spotlight for its environmental impact—and despite the backlash, it’s still growing fast.

This week, we take a closer look at the industry’s growing waste crisis—and explore how AI might just be the unexpected tool to help fashion clean up its act.

🗞️ In the news

👗 Global clothing production doubled between 2000 and 2015—and it hasn’t slowed down since.

🗑️ Every year, the world discards 92 million tonnes of textile waste—that’s the equivalent of one garbage truck full of clothes dumped every single second.

🤖 Let’s dive into how AI might help the fashion industry clean up its act and finally get its waste crisis under control.

🥗 What to eat

Food for thought:

🌾 Animal agriculture uses over 80% of the world’s farmland—yet delivers less than 20% of global calories.

💧 Producing a single liter of cow’s milk takes over 600 liters of water—compared to just 48 for oat milk.

🔥 A single plant-based meal a day can shrink your personal food emissions by nearly one-third.

Good for the planet, great for your plate. 🌍💚

♻️ Eco Tip

Awareness: 🔁 Millions of garments end up in landfills every year—even though many brands now offer take-back programs to reuse, recycle, or resell your old clothes, even if they’re worn or damaged.

Action: 👕 Before tossing anything, check if your favorite brand accepts returns of used or broken items. Companies like Patagonia, H&M, Levi’s, and The North Face offer clothing take-back or recycling programs. Some even give you discounts in return!

Give your old clothes a second life—and keep textile waste out of landfills. ♻️

🏆 Eco-Challenge

Be the first to post a photo of your Eco-Challenge on Facebook, and we’ll plant 2 x🌳 just for you!

The Eco-Challenges are here to help us build real sustainable habits. Here’s how to make them stick:

Commit – That little voice saying, "This won’t make a difference"? Ignore it. When enough of us commit, the impact is huge.

📝 Plan – Some challenges might feel like too much work at first, but with a little planning, they will easily fit into your daily routine.

🎯 Execute – Try it once. Then again. Before you know it, you’ve built a sustainable habit that sticks.
